Hello! My name is Carley Hummel, and I’m the graphic design intern at MayeCreate Design. My main role is to help with website and print design, as well as create social media banners. I’m originally from Kansas City, the Kansas side, but that doesn’t mean I have ever been a Jayhawk fan! I moved to Columbia to attend the University of Missouri and to finally be surrounded by Tigers. In May 2016, I’ll be graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Graphic Design and a minor in Art History. I can’t believe this will be my final year at Mizzou!
Mizzou isn’t the only place I have studied in my college career. I was lucky enough to spend three weeks in Florence, Italy studying the Mediterranean lifestyle. At Florence University of Art I learned how to cook traditional mediterranean food, how surprisingly healthy dressing every meal with olive oil is and how my walk to class is nothing compared to how far Italians walk daily.
Even though I was studying a lifestyle, I was surrounded by art history. It was fascinating to see all the paintings, statues and historical churches I learned about during classes in person. I came back this semester with a better understanding of art and the lifestyle of some of the most famous artists. Through studying abroad, I have grown an itch to travel. In the summer after I graduate, I hope to travel and learn more about different cultures and lifestyles.
Even though I am from the best city in the Midwest, I left my heart in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Out of everywhere I have traveled or lived, Jackson Hole has touched me the most. Maybe it’s the beautiful scenery, quaint town or being surrounded by wildlife that makes it so special to me. It is the only place I daydream about being. Since I am constantly dreaming about being there, in my spare time I love to paint pictures I have taken while traveling there. Painting is not only a hobby, but a passion of mine too.
In the summer after I graduate, I hope to backpack through Europe and see more of the ancient art I have studied. After that, I will see where the wind takes me. I would love to move to the city and work as a graphic designer. Even though I only have a year left of school, I still have a lot to learn as an artist and a designer, but I’m very excited to see how I grow and where my future takes me! For now, I’ll be practicing and enhancing my design skills in the comfort of the MayeCreate office.
