The saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is a gosh darn lie. Words hurt sometimes. Words can break you into a million pieces, but they can also glue you back together again and build you back up. That’s the crazy thing about words; they can do so much, yet they aren’t even tangible. Words can make a powerful impact on someone if the correct one is used.
Then comes the overuse of some words. Somehow, marketers have managed to make astonishing words seem grisly and unsuitable. Overused words have lost their emphasis.
So, as a word enthusiast, I have taken it upon myself to find words that I feel are overused on websites. After much internal debate about which to include, I dropped my list down to 5. I found the definitions and synonyms for these words as well.
Unique is an adjective meaning to exist as the only one or as the sole example; having no like or equal; not typical.
Now I’m not a genius by any means, but I’m not entirely convinced it’s possible for everything your business does to be considered unique. By using the word unique, you’re creating the opposite effect from what you’re trying to convey. I’m sure your business is unique in its own way though, so instead of falling into the same group as the rest of unique people, try using a different word instead.
Effective is an adjective meaning adequate to accomplish a purpose; producing the intended or expected result.
When I hear that definition, I can’t help but think that word is mediocre in itself. Clients don’t want someone who will just produce what they expect. Yes, that’s what they’re paying for, but clients want someone that will go above and beyond their expectations. The word effective just doesn’t seem to fulfill that.
Responsible is an adjective meaning to have a capacity for moral decisions and therefore accountable; capable of rational thought or action.
By definition, responsible is a stunning word. Accountability, morals and rationality are all qualities clients look for. It’s great for your company to be responsible. The word itself is about as washed out as I am in the winter though. That makes it lose its “wow” factor.
Analytical is an adjective meaning pertaining to or proceeding by analysis; skilled or habitually using analysis. I know you aren’t supposed to use the word you’re trying to define within the definition, but I couldn’t find a reasonable definition without using the word analysis. Analysis is defined as a careful study of something to learn about its parts, what they do and how they relate to each other.
I really hope clients would choose to put their trust into a company who is analytical. In my opinion, this quality has high importance when I look for someone to work with. The word is just so overused though that it makes me wonder if the business really is analytical, or if they just wrote that about themselves because that’s what the competition is doing. To stick out from the rest, try using some of these words instead.
Creative is an adjective meaning resulting from originality of thought and expression; imaginative.
Every company out there is creative, because they each put a little personal touch on their way of doing business. If you were really creative though, you wouldn’t have stooped down to the level of impotent words to describe yourself in an unfruitful way. I can’t help but point that out; sorry, not sorry.
How unique and creative are you feeling right now? I used to think these were awesome words, but now I’m not so sure I can agree with that. I did fall in love with some of the synonyms I supplied you with though, so be prepared to see them used in future blog posts.
Of course it’s alright to use the above words everyone once in a while. I just encourage you to strive to vary your word choice and take the time to think of more engaging and impactful ways to communicate about your business. If your business is astounding, you need an animated word choice to expose how awesome you really are!
