In today’s technologically advanced world fundraisers for non-profit organizations have the ability to be more successful than ever before. By capitalizing on the amazing array of technology available non-profit organizations can accelerate, expand and amplify their fundraising efforts.
The newly published 2014 Fundraising Technology Trends Study gathers together the experiences of 142 fundraising organizations with technology to provide real data on what’s working and what isn’t. The study, authored by Find Accounting Software and co-sponsored by the Southeastern Wisconsin chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, revealed specific data about how today’s most successful fundraisers are using technology. Here are some of the key findings:
The study revealed that “4 out of 5 fundraisers feel that better technology leads to fundraising success. But only 1 in 3 say they currently have the tools they need to be effective.” This means that non-profit organizations are aware of the fact that adopting new technologies could benefit their cause, but now they need the motivation to act on that knowledge and implement new fundraising techniques.
It’s important to remember that this “technology” doesn’t have to be expensive to use but it will require a new kind of effort. For example, creating a video to raise awareness for a cause and encourage donations can be done without a bunch of fancy equipment. You could simply record yourself on the computer talking about the cause and pair it with a few PowerPoint slides outlining exactly how the donations will be used. Upload the entire package to YouTube, share the link on your website and social media and PRESTO! You’ve just used technology to help with fundraising.
We just mentioned video content as one web communication channel to boost your fundraising efforts, but as you can see, there are more popular options out there. Websites are used by 74% of non-profit organizations as a tool for fundraising. Including calls-to-action on your website that ask visitors to donate is one way to turn your website into a fundraising machine.
The researchers also revealed that a multi-channel strategy correlates with fundraising success. The most successful fundraisers used three times as many web communication methods on average compared to fundraisers that proved ineffective.
Keep in mind that if you are going to market your fundraiser on multiple platforms the overall strategy should be cohesive. Think of it like a campaign and spread similar messages across all communication channels using consistent tones, word choice and imagery.
Another major finding of the study was that “non-profits who accept online donations are 24% more likely to have increased fundraising revenue last year.” If non-profit organizations want to receive donations, they have to be conscious of the donation method that suits the lifestyle of their audience. People lead very busy and hectic lives, why not streamline the donation process with a few simple clicks of a mouse. Incorporating an online donation portal with your website makes it quick, easy and convenient for people to contribute to the cause.
