Editing photos can be troublesome. And let’s be honest, nobody likes to spend time editing and re-uploading photos to WordPress. It’s cumbersome work.

By using the media editing feature of WordPress, though, you can edit photos that have already been uploaded to WordPress without having to re-upload them. To edit an uploaded photo:

  1. Click on Media in the left sidebar or go to the post with the image you’d like to edit and click on the Upload/Insert media icon . Then click Gallery.
  2. Select the image you would like to crop, resize or rotate.
  3. Click the Edit Image button below the image thumbnail.

Crop Resize WP Images

To resize the image

Click Scale Image in the top box. Enter the desired dimensions and click Scale. Images should only be scaled to a smaller size. Otherwise the image will become blurry.

To crop the image

Enter the cropping dimensions in the box called Image Crop. Click and drag your curser over the photo to select the part of the image you would like to crop. For more precise cropping, you can use these shortcuts:

  • Arrow: move by 10px
  • Shift + arrow: move by 1px
  • Ctrl + arrow: resize by 10px
  • Ctrl + Shift + arrow: resize by 1px
  • Shift + drag: lock aspect ration

To rotate or flip the image

Simply click on the buttons above the image. You have four options:

  • Rotate 90° counter-clockwise
  • Rotate 90° clockwise
  • Flip vertically
  • Flip horizontally

When you are making all of your edits, click Update Media. You will now have the perfectly-sized image to complement your blog post or page.
