An FTP program is a gateway to a hosting space. It allows the user to login and upload, download or make other changes to the contents of a hosting space which may include a variety of file types and folders. It allows a user to edit their website.

A hosting space (most of the time) is a designated folder on a server that holds all the HTML files, CSS stylesheet(s), images and anything else that is accessible online. To view the contents of a hosting space  a URL and web browser is needed.

Someone can open a web browser (ie: Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) and type in a URL (ie: www.mayecreate.com) into the address bar. The web browser can then open an HTML or other coded file to view its content (this is the simple explanation for what happens).

Someone could also view specific images or files by knowing the correct URL, as determined by the location of the item within the hosting space.

In summary: An FTP program is a gateway to a hosting space. It allows the user to login and upload, download or make other changes to the contents of a hosting space which may include a variety of file types and folders. It allows a user to edit their website.
